PASADENA, Calif. — Gus Malzahn will have to make room on his mantle for another award.
Before arriving at the Rose Bowl for tonight's BCS championship game, Malzahn earned yet another honor, as he was selected as the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year. Auburn's first-year coach has led the team to a 12-1 record and an SEC championship. With a win against top-ranked Florida State tonight, Malzahn will give the Tigers their second BCS title in four years.
Thanks to Auburn's spectacular bounce-back campaign — its 8.5-game improvement from last year's 3-9 record is tied for the biggest one-year turnaround in NCAA history — Malzahn has won numerous awards this postseason.
Along with the Liberty Mutual honor, he accepted the Eddie Robinson coach of the year award on Saturday, and won both the Home Depot and Associated Press national coach of the year awards last month. In addition, he was named the SEC's coach of the year by his fellow league coaches as well as the AP.
