Ke$ha entered rehab for an eating disorder Friday, according to TMZ. She entered a facility called Timberline Knolls, near Chicago, the same place singer Demi Lovato sought rehab in 2010.
In a statement to TMZ, Kesha said, "I'm a crusader for being yourself and loving yourself, but I've found it hard to practice. I'll be unavailable for the next 30 days, seeking treatment for my eating disorder ... to learn to love myself again, exactly as I am."
Ke$ha, 26, began her singing career in 2005, when she was signed to recording label Kemosabe Entertainment. She's known for her unique style, singing an infusion of pop and rap. In 2010, her debut album "Animal" reached the pinnacle on the recording charts, and yielded two hit singles, "Tik Tok" and "We R Who We R." Unlike most young pop singers, Ke$ha is a songwriter, and has written for Britney Spears.
Ke$ha seemed noticeably thinner in a new video with Latin rapper Pitbull, called "Timber," a song that appears on the latter singer's EP, released November 2013.
It is our hope that Ke$ha comes out of her 30-day rehab with a renewed sense of purpose, and the realization that she's an inspiration to many. Her fans will likely greet her with open arms. Eating disorders
There are different kinds of eating disorders. These include: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. Eating disorders usually affect women more than men, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Such disorders are not normally standalone illnesses; they usually accompany mental illness or other behavioral issues.
Being in the public eye and under the close scrutiny of a judgmental public can instill insecurities and self-doubts. In the entertainment industry, much focus is on physical appearance and thinness. According to the NIH, the likely precursors to developing an eating disorder are: low self-esteem; depression, anxiety, stress or loneliness; difficult interpersonal relationships; and a history of physical or sexual abuse. Celebrities who have struggled with eating disorders
Ke$ha is hardly the first celebrity to battle an eating disorder. She follows in the footsteps of many before her who have struggled-and continue to struggle-with this insidious disease.
Singer and choreographer Paula Abdul entered rehab in 1994 for bulimia. Singer Karen Carpenter's eating disorder began with a diet that eventually ended in her death from heart attack at age 32. Lady Gaga revealed to a publication that she suffered from bulimia at the start of her singing career. Actress Portia de Rossi blamed the pressures of Hollywood for causing her eating disorder. For singer and songwriter Fiona Apple, her eating disorder was caused by a rape that occurred at age 12. Apple reportedly said the disease was not caused by any desire to control her weight but instead, was the outcome of her traumatic rape. Actress Jane Fonda reportedly suffered from anorexia and bulimia for 30 years. Meredith Vieira, former TV news anchor, reportedly said she battled an eating disorder when she was younger. Actress Kate Winslet is open about her struggle with eating disorders, and has reportedly said she comes from a family that loves food.
