SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)- Each year on the third Monday of February, the nation honors founding father George Washington's Birthday. The federal holiday, now commonly known as "Presidents Day," also falls near the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln. Here is a look at what is open, and what is not, for this holiday.
Federal and state offices are closed for the day, which includes Post Offices. No residential or business mail will be delivered or picked up.The New York Stock Exchange is also closed in observance of the Presidents Day.The Registry of Motor Vehicles is closed for the day, and many (but not all) area banks will be closed. You may want to call your bank before you go there to see if they are open today.For some cities and towns, garbage and recycling services will not run on Presidents Day.Throughout the Pioneer Valley, schools and most public libraries are also closed for the day, but many retail stores, grocery stores, and liquor stores are open.The PVTA will operate its regularly scheduled services in Springfield, but the Northampton and UMass services will have an altered schedule.
