The reveal of the new 'Episode VII' cast came just in time for May 4's Star Wars Day! On USA Entertainment Now, Carly Mallenbaum and writer Brian Truitt fill you in on the fan-made holiday and what new actors could mean for the Star Wars franchise. VPC
May the Force - and great
Star Wars music - be with you.
Star Wars Day, or "May the 4th" to Jedi lovers everywhere, is today, and whether you're building
Star Wars LEGO sets, whipping up some blue milk or otherwise celebrating George Lucas' sci-fi universe, a soundtrack can be put to good use.
So in honor of the fan holiday, here is the Jek Porkins Memorial Star Wars Day Playlist, a mix that even Jabba the Hutt would spin on his sail barge. (Porkins, for the uninitiated, was a burly Rebel Alliance pilot - call sign "Red Six" - who sacrificed his life heroically piloting one of the X-Wing Fighters that made a bombing run on the Death Star in 1977's
Star Wars.)
John Williams' themes were signatures of the six movies, so there's a wide range of musical cues in the playlist, from the cult-classic
Cantina Band to the emotional
Yoda's Theme. The prequel
The Phantom Menace left a lot to be desired, but at least the powerful
Duel of the Fates track was a highlight.
More recently, Kevin Kiner has scored more of the recent
Star Wars animated series -
Meet Ahsoka is tied to Anakin Skywalker's young apprentice in
Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and teases the music that fans will hear when Kiner composes for the upcoming
Star Wars Rebels cartoon.
Star Wars also inspired a lot of good music, too. Trumpet legend Maynard Ferguson does a disco version of the
Star Wars main theme, and Epica put a heavy-metal spin on Darth Vader's
Imperial March.
Bounty hunters are big in
Star Wars lore, and the reptilian Bossk inspired a rock band's name while another gets namechecked in the title of MC Chris'
Dengar's Dumptruck.
And "Weird Al" Yankovic did quite a few
Star Wars spoofs, though one of his most classic was
The Saga Begins, a little ode to
The Phantom Menace set to the tune of
American Pie.
