The inevitable finally occurred.
DeMarcus Ware has been released by the Dallas Cowboys. Ware was slated to count $16 million against Dallas' salary cap in 2014, which largely came from a base salary of $12.25 million.
According to the team's website, Dallas will save $7.4 million in salary cap space.
Dallas attempted to persuade Ware to restructure his contract, but a deal was not reached before the start of free agency on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, when NFL teams were required to be compliant with the salary cap.
Last season, Ware, 31, missed three games and had six sacks, the lowest output in his nine-year career. The seven-time Pro Bowler also had surgery earlier in February to repair nerve damage in his right elbow. Ware may not have much left in the tank, but could help a team in need of a situational pass rusher.
It is hard to imagine a playoff contender expecting him to carry the defensive load, but he will likely receive a short-term offer this offseason. Denver, New England and Green Bay are playoff-caliber teams in need of a pass rusher, and Ware might excel if signed by any of those teams. Follow the NFL free agency frenzy right here.
